New Learner Registration (Follow the ABCs)
The following list outlines BLC’s new learner registration process for both of our literacy and high school programs:
A. Complete a New Learner Registration Package
To get your new learner registration package,
you can:
- Pick up a paper copy here at BLC (129 12th Street, Brandon) to complete it here or take it home.
- Ask us to email you an electronic copy.
- Download it from our website and pick one of the following actions: Scan and email the completed package back to us at: info@blcbrandon.com.
- Print, complete, and drop it off to us here at 129 12th Street, Brandon, Manitoba.
B. Meet with a Teacher to Review Your Registration and Get Your Learning Assessment Plan
When you drop off your completed new learner registration package, we will:
- Begin your registration appointment.
- Review your registration package, transcripts, and ID.
- Speak with you and make sure we are a good fit for each other.
- Create an assessment plan for you.
- Provide you with material to help you prepare for your learning assessments.
We base the type of learning assessments you complete (e.g., English, math, biology, physics, chemistry) on the courses you are interested in taking.
Note:
Be prepared to complete your learning assessments when you drop off your completed registration package and documentation (ID and transcripts). **Plan to be here for 1-2 hours.
C. Complete Your Learning Assessments (1-2 hours)
As mentioned, we base the type of learning assessment we give you
(e.g., English, math, biology etc.) on the courses you are interested in taking
and your teacher’s discretion.
BLC learning assessments:
- Must be completed in the classroom.
- Take 1-2 hours to complete and you must start them on the same day as your registration appointment (so plan your time accordingly).
- Must be completed within one month of your registration appointment to continue in the program, or we will require you to re-register and begin this process again.
- Are vital to our registration process because they help us accurately place you at the right level in our programming.
What happens after I complete my assessments?
Once your teacher reviews your assessments, we will contact you to set up a learning plan meeting. At this meeting you will have an opportunity to set your goals and create a program timeline.
D. Attend a Learning Plan Meeting (Meet with a Teacher to Develop Your Learning Plan)
We tailor your learning plan to your needs to help you meet your goals.
During your learning plan meeting, your teacher will:
- Go over the results of your assessments.
- Discuss your goals and, together, set realistic goals and outcomes.
- Talk about your timeline (when you want to be done).
- Develop your learning plan.
- Answer any questions you may have for us.
Learning plans thrive on short-term goals!
We will design your learning plans to have short-term goals to help you reach your learning targets.
As educators, we know that learners who set and finish short-term goals are more likely to stay on track to meet their long-term goals.
Plans and goals change because life happens.
Your instructor may ask to meet with you to review and revise your learning plans and goals, based on your progress.
You can change your goals and plans when you both decide it is appropriate.
We create your learning plan with
YOUR INPUT.
After all, YOU are doing this FOR YOU.
BLC’s attendance and participation policy.
We require all learners to connect with their teacher a minimum of two (2) times per month.
Keep in touch with your teacher regularly, so we can monitor your progress.
All our learners MUST connect with a teacher twice a month.
Your academic progress is linked to your attendance.
Returning Learner Registration
Have you been absent for a while and aren’t sure if we still consider you a
student? Don’t worry, BLC welcomes all returning learners!
After a one month absence, we will contact you to determine whether you plan to return to your learning program. Please contact us to find out what you need!
